According to the US Department of Education, one-third of students pursing higher education are the first in their family to attend college. These students are collectively called first-generation college students. Yet, only 24 percent of first generation students graduate with a bachelor’s degree compared to 68 percent of students whos parents are college graduates.
In this workshop, we will learn more about the characteristics, challenges, and opportunities first-generation students face and how libraries can help these students navigate through their college experience. Attendees will leave with ideas for programs and services they can implement at their libraries to help first generation students.
