The Path Not Taken: a Descriptive Cataloguing "Might Have Been."

Speaker: Michael Gorman

Discusses the nature of works, resources, catalog records, and descriptive cataloguing rules. Shows the purposes and importance of standards (international and national) and the means by which we evaluate retrieval systems based on those standards. Poses eight questions to be asked of RDA and its potential effects. Briefly discusses the evolution of AACR2, its achievements, and shortcomings. Describes an alternative path that could have been taken to build on those achievements and remedy those short comings. Discusses the future and the problems for catalogs that neither AACR2 nor RDA address.
